Grief Counseling

Though grief is an inevitable part of life, it is still one of the most challenging and unexpected events we will all experience at one point in our lives. Sometimes, grief can feel like a constant companion, overshadowing your ability to engage with everyday life and those around you. Our therapists at Voyages Counseling are here for you. Our goal is to help you learn to cope with the myriad of emotions that grief can bring. We understand that everyone experiences grief differently. While some might be able to cope and come to terms with their loss after a relatively short period of time, for others, this can take longer or totally disrupt their ability to participate in day-to-day life.

No matter what length of time it takes to grieve your loss, grief counseling can be a great tool in navigating your healing process while you grow through your emotions in a healthy, productive way.

Grief, loss, and bereavement can look completely different from one person to the next. It can also be caused by a wide range of circumstances. Perhaps you are struggling to cope with the death of a loved one. Or, are unable to move on from a broken relationship with friends and family. Grief counseling offers a way to work through its various stages. A grief counselor, such as the compassionate therapists at Voyages, can help you develop methods and strategies for coping with your loss and grief. Grief counseling provides those who have experienced loss with an avenue to discuss their feelings and emotions, helping them discover methods to ease the grieving process.

  • You are struggling to come to terms with a loss

  • You are experiencing feelings of overwhelming grief, fear, despair, or worry

  • Your faith feels shattered, and you are experiencing feelings of abandonment during a time of great need

  • You feel alone as others around you have seemed to move on

  • You wish for a happier, more secure and connected life with those around you

  • You’d like professional support to better work through the grieving process

Though one of the most natural things we as humans do, the grieving process can be an isolating and difficult time. Grief is the natural reaction to any form of loss, especially when losing a loved one or important support system in your life. The grieving process can look a bit different for everyone, however it usually follows five steps: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and finally, acceptance. In the final stage of acceptance, this does not necessarily mean that you are “healed” from the loss, but with a strong support system and grief counseling, a person can recover from the loss with time.

Sometimes grief can manifest into symptoms of anxiety, depression, eating problems, aggressive or self-destructive behaviors, and trouble sleeping. According to the American Psychological Association, over 15% of bereaved people are likely to experience this type of grief known as “Complicated Grief”. Should you, or a loved one, experience this particular form of grief, consulting with a therapist or mental health professional can be a great help to work through the severe side-effects of your grief.

With Voyages Counseling, you and your therapist can first foster a relationship based on mutual trust, compassion, and empathy in which you should feel comfortable to openly express the complexities of your grief. Then, together you two will find strategies to cope. If you happen to have lost a person with whom you had a complex relationship, different strategies and methods can be used to detangle complex emotions surrounding the relationship, and subsequently the loss of it.
